Author Lori Duran exhumes a treacherous and tumultuous time in Texas’s early statehood.

By the end of the Civil War, Texas was impoverished, lawless and had experienced suicide in the Governor’s Mansion. War time turmoil ensnared the state and especially its last Confederate governor, Pendleton Murrah. Orphaned by his mother as an infant, Murrah was raised by a charitable organization that saw to his education. Despite having tuberculosis, he moved to Texas and became a lawyer and a politician. He was elected governor in November 1863 and served until the end of the Civil War. The war brought on multiple hardships, culminating into chaos. Former soldiers robbed the state treasury in a violent shoot-out while Murrah and other Confederates exiled themselves in Mexico. Murrah died south of the border, where his remains are still lost. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
With an educational background in history Lori Duran investigates and writes about stories of past events and people. This has been her life-long passion. Duran has served on the board of directors at the Austin History Center Association for both the Oral Histories and Social Media committees. She is a dedicated alumna after getting her master’s degree from the University of Texas in 1986. In her spare time, she actively participates in local history focused organizations. Duran also writes free-lance magazine articles and books about Texas history such as, Austin’s Travis Heights Neighborhood and the University of Texas at Austin: The First One Hundred Years. Her latest book titled “Civil War Chaos in Texas: The Tumultuous Tenure of Governor Pendleton Murrah” describes the difficult Civil War experiences for Texans and its governor especially at the end of the war.
