 Season 21
1905-1915: A Modern World

Upcoming Modern Times Lectures

What words do we associate with modernity? Technology…clean lines…new…chaos. Between 1905-1915, the world experienced all of these concepts, and we here in Texas were no different.

This year, Modern Times will explore the ways Texas became increasingly global through the opening of the Houston Ship Channel, the reverberations in Texas from the Mexican Revolution, and the arrival of a French filmmaker who created hundreds of Spaghetti Westerns for export. We will look at the shockingly modern work of Georgia O’Keeffe from early in her career in West Texas, consider the shock-waves caused by the sinking of the Titanic, and reflect on the ways the 1906 Brownsville Raid spoke to American racial conflicts carried over from the 19th century and would deepen during the following decades of the 20th.

Join us, as we live in a different but thoroughly modern moment, 1905-1915.
