This lecture will briefly describe the motivation behind Spain's King Carlos III's determination to have the colonists win the American War of Independence, and explore Spain's effort to ensure this victory. Important Revolutionary War battles fought along the Gulf Coast under the leadership of Bernardo de Gálvez, the Spanish Governor of the Louisiana Territory at the time, will also be discussed, together with the contribution from Texas in this endeavor. The current effort by the Granaderos and Damas de Gálvez to educate the public about this documented, but little known history will also be discussed.
To attend online, register and receive the Zoom meeting link by email ahead of the lecture.
About the Speaker
John Espinosa
In 2005 John Espinosa was admitted to the Order Granaderos de Gálvez, and in 2008, he participated in an homage to Gálvez in Mexico City where Spanish scholars revolutionized his view of American History. Since then, he has been an active member of the Order and served as Governor of the Houston Chapter from 2016 – 2021, during which time he increased growth and activity in the chapter. He led teams to organize educational conferences at Rice University, which included a major symposium on Gálvez – Spain’s Hero of the American Revolution (2016), and a conference on Spain and Benjamin Franklin’s Influence to Support the American Revolution (2017). He also commissioned Yo Solo, Gálvez and the American Revolution, an opera about the great Spanish patriot (presented at Rice’s Shepherd School of Music in 2018)
Espinosa served as Vice Governor General From 2014 to 2022 and was elected Governor General in 2022, assuming the office in January 2023. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and modern language from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management, now part of Arizona State University. His career has focused on negotiations of major, high tech and high dollar contracts for GE, United Space Alliance (Space Shuttle), and Boeing (Space Station), and he currently owns and manages a company that recycles wooden pallets. He is a recipient of La Condecoración de Isabel la Católica for his work with the Granaderos y Damas de Gálvez and for working to foster a strong bond between the United States and Spain.
