Built in 1856, the NCHM Slave Quarters is the only intact slave dwelling left standing in the city of Austin. Now newly restored, this building is the last touchstone to a difficult but crucially important history.

The NCHM offers Urban Enslavement in Austin - The NCHM Slave Quarters Tour once a month. This one-hour guided tour of the building and grounds explores the complicated influence of slavery on the city and how the impact of that institution resounds even today.
After the tour, visitors have time to take the self-guided audio tour of the main house and view the rotating exhibitions (all included with the admission price for the tour).

The NCHM has created an immersive experience to recall the enslaved individuals who labored at our site over its first decade (1856-1865), included with all museum admission.
The experience is QR-code enabled and brings visitors into the same space with the enslaved, to better understand their working and living conditions.
History is at is most powerful when we can walk in the footsteps of those who came before us. Visit today to stand alongside the men, women, and children who inhabited these spaces over 160 years ago.
