In the early years of the twentieth century, Georgia O’Keeffe was not yet a famous painter. She was working as an art educator, a field that directed her to jobs far from her home and family, to places like the isolated and wide-open Texas Panhandle.
This lecture will explore O’Keeffe as a thoroughly “modern” woman in the 1910s, who discovered herself—her independence, creativity, sexuality, and more—while living and working in West Texas. She was deeply inspired by the landscape and raw beauty of this region in the American West, and she began sending artwork that responded to Texas back to New York City, to her future husband Alfred Stieglitz who hung it in his respected 291 Gallery and made her an officially recognized American artist. Though O'Keeffe did not stay long in Texas, the state had an enduring impact on her life and career, arguably prompting her dramatic pivot from beloved educator to successful studio artist—the role we all know her in today.

About the Speaker:
Amy Von Lintel, Ph.D is a Professor of Art History at West Texas A&M University. Her areas of research include modern and contemporary art of the American West, women and gender, fakes and forgeries in art, and the history of art history. Her publications include several articles for the Texas-based art magazine Glasstire in 2026, as well as the books Art at the Crossroads: The Surprising Aesthetics of the Texas Panhandle with Texas Tech University Press, 2025; Three Women Artists: Expanding Abstract Expressionism in the American West with Texas A&M University Press, 2022; Georgia O’Keeffe’s Wartime Texas Letters, also with Texas A&M Press, 2020, and Georgia O’Keeffe Watercolors, 1916-1918 with Radius Books and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, 2016. Born and raised in the Midwest, in Kansas City, she now lives in Amarillo, Texas where she co-owns a brewery and taproom on Historic Route 66 with her husband.
