By popular demand, the highlight of this study tour will be an afternoon at Crystal Bridges, complemented by important historic buildings in Tulsa and points east

Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa

Approximate Itinerary

Thorncrown Chapel, Eureka Springs

DAY 1: Wednesday, March 20
Flights to Tulsa, arriving early afternoon
Lunch and collections tour: Philbrook Museum of Art (splendid collections of Old Masters, modern and contemporary art in the gracious Italianate home built by Genevieve and Waite Phillips, set into a hillside above an expansive park graced with sculpture)
Drive to Bentonville, check into 21C Museum Hotel
Welcome Dinner at 21C

DAY 2: Thursday, March 21
Walmart Museum Heritage Lab
Optional walk through the scenic woods between Bentonville’s town square and Crystal Bridges
Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art: Lunch at Eleven Restaurant
Guided tour of collection highlights and generous free time until Museum closing
Free evening in Bentonville

DAY 3: Friday, March 22
Drive to Eureka Springs, arrive mid-morning
Thorncrown Chapel (1980, the world-famous design of E. Fay Jones, apprentice of Frank Lloyd wright and winner of AIA’s Gold Medal)
Lunch at Crescent Hotel (1886, ornate Victorian style, celebrated among Ozarks landmarks)
Bella Vista: Mildred Cooper Chapel (1988, E. Fay Jones)
Bentonville (time permitting): Peel Mansion Museum and Gardens (1875, Italianate)

Boston Avenue Methodist Church, Tulsa

DAY 4: Saturday, March 23
Return to Tulsa
Lunch: Tulsa Club, a modern tavern in Tulsa’s Deco District
Tour: Tulsa’s Art Deco heritage (the most Art Deco buildings of any American City)*, including Boston Avenue Methodist Church (1929), Philtower (1927), and Philcade Building (1931)
Early evening flights from Tulsa to Austin

*Our tour will celebrate the centenary of Art Deco style, born in Paris at the 1925 Exposition of Decorative Arts and proliferating around the western world, appearing especially in the noble buildings constructed to observe the Texas Centenary of 1936

History of the NCHM Study Tours

Founded by NSCDA-TX President Mary Etzold in 2005, Friends custom tours feature Itineraries rich in architectural history, particularly historic house museums, enriching the travelers’ perspectives on the achievements and challenges of NCHM and sister historic properties; special events including receptions with Dames in other states; special exhibitions; offerings in the performing arts; and general sightseeing; historic hotels, chartered transportation, fine dining; groups limited to 20 per tour. These tours have cemented good friendships among travelers and sustained support for the NCHM.
