Deep in the Heart: Historic Texas Quilts

Texan Quilts Where They Belong

On view February 13 – March 10, 2019

Our 4th annual exhibit of American quilts encompasses patchwork, applique, and crazy quilts made in Austin and Texas.  Though the quilts on view were sewn here in Texas, and in some cases sewn just blocks away from the museum, they fit into a national paradigm.  The profoundly local Baker Quilt, for instance, incorporates ribbons and other commemorative memorabilia from Austin, but through the decorative language of the crazy quilt style that swept across the nation in the 1880s.  In every case, the quilter‘s love for her craft, and the thought and skill that went into the production of the final object, honors a commitment to beauty as well as function.
